Still lifes have shaped art history for centuries, drawing attention to specific objects. Central to this are perspective, lighting, and the resulting emphasis on the object's details. This applies not only to painting, but also to photography. These photographs focus on the object itself, light and shadow, and the connection between objects.
The objects of these photographs are centred and alone against a neutral white background. This deliberate emptiness creates space for focus, concentration, and contemplation. Light falls on the objects from above, accentuating the contrast with the white background. This reduction to basic visual contrasts conveys calm and clarity. The setting reveals both the overall form and microscopic texture of the objects.
With this orientation, the focus is on directly representing reality, observing it, and meditatively contemplating the objects.
The four analogue photographs, taken as part of a commissioned project for Rails Magazine in 1994, are framed by the full analogue film frame. The fourth photograph
creates a link between the first still-life images.
